Lets talk about search engine optimization commonly referred to as "SEO".  Every web page contains meta elements (meta tags) used to provide information or content about a web page making it possible for search engines to properly index your website.  Which in turn makes your site available to someone searching for your particular product or service.

When you search a keyword or phrase on one the major search engines, a list of related sites will appear.  At the top and right hand side of the page you will find the sponsored advertising, these cost money whenever a potential customer clicks on that listing.  Underneath the sponsored listings you will find the organic listings (free) which is where everyone would like to be and why SEO is an important step in helping your website move up in that listing. Take a closer look at one of the organic listings; the first line will be in bold (this is the page title), this title should briefly let the customer know what you have to offer.  The next 1-2 lines are the page description giving a potential client information about your products and/or services and basically why they should choose your site.

Page descriptions are highly regarded by most major search engines like Yahoo and Live Search, while Google will fall back on this tag when information about the page itself is requested.  The description provides a concise explanation of a web page's content.  Including keywords relevant to the page's content is also helpful.  It is recommended by most major search engines that size a page description should be 200 characters of less.

Major search engine robots also go by factors such as: the volume of incoming links from related websites, quantity and quality of content, spelling, uniqueness, press releases, age of site, relevance and freshness of content.
